How do I care for a baby (joey) sugar glider?
We purchased what we thought was 2 males but it turned out one was female! I was holding them last night and then a baby just crawled out of the pouch. It is about 2 inches long and its eyes are still closed and is always clinging to its papa. The tail isn't fluffy yet. How should I care for it and when should i start to handle it so it can get used to me?
Please do not try and hand feed this baby! Any milk or milk replacer you can make will not provide for him as well as his mothers milk. Sorry, just trying to make it clear that the previous poster has not researched gliders. Cat milk is WAY too fatty and isn't nearly good enough for marsupials.
I had to hand raise a rejected baby and it was very hard work to keep him alive. He's much smaller than his twin brother and only made it because I fed him every two hours for over 6 weeks and kept him warm constantly.
Phew! That being said, on to the real questions at hand.
Unless you see it by itself at the bottom of the cage or cold in a pouch, you don't need to do anything. You could probably start handling him in about a week, but only for short amounts of time (like 15 minutes, then build up to 25-30 a night). Usually the parents are relieved to have a break so they can play
You can find a ton of good info at http://www.suzsugargliders.com/ - I'd recommend getting the boy neutered since it can be very hard not only to socialize many babies but also to find good homes for them. I had my dad glider and the twin boys all neutered recently and they're all doing great, cuddly as ever! HTH
