What's the best way to get a large picture to load quickly on a website?

We're wanting to create a webiste that will leave visitors feeling like they've found a treasure on the shore of a beach. We're thinking that the best way to do that is to use one large picture of this scene and then add elements over the top.

If you are just wanting to use a background image that fills the browser window, you'll have to make your page flexible and fluid. People are using all kinds of browser windows and the fluidity of your page depends on how well it is viewed at these different sizes.

Web images do not have to be high resolution images which carries with it a large file size. If you have a high quality image, you need to use PhotoShop and save it as a jpg using File>Save for Web. This will give you a lot of control over the quality setting and thus the file size. PS shows you the file size versus the load time at different modem speeds. Usually a quality factor of 2-4 is good enough for a web page. Especially if there is content over it.

A preloader is good, but they are usually JavaScript based and will not work if a viewer surfs with it turned off in the browser.
